To experience and build on Ethereum, you’ll need some Eth.
Eth is the fuel of the Ethereum ecosystem; it is the means by which you purchase “rent” on the World Computer.
Don’t worry – there are many ways to get started for free. We’ve listed them here.
Developer Option 1
Fire up a personal Ethereum blockchain in a matter of seconds, which you can use to run tests, execute commands, and inspect state while controlling how the chain operates.
Since it’s your own personal chain, you can give yourself as much Eth as you’d like!
Developer Option 2
Public Test Networks
The Public Test Networks are Ethereum networks that run the same protocol as Mainnet Ethereum, and are used for testing purposes before migrating to Mainnet. ETH on the Public Test Networks has no monetary value and is very easy to obtain (for free, via Faucets)
Görli Testnet is the first proof-of-authority cross-client testnet, synching Parity Ethereum, Geth, Nethermind, Hyperledger Besu (formerly Pantheon), and EthereumJS.
The Rinkeby testnet is a proof-of-authority chain supported only by the Geth team. Eth can be obtained via a faucet.
The Kovan testnet is a proof-of-authority chain supported only by the Parity team. Eth can be obtained via a Faucet.
The Ropsten testnet is a proof-of-work chain supported by both Geth and Parity (two of the main Ethereum clients). Eth can be obtained via mining or a faucet.
